Check first that you still qualify under the 2025 law: Italian citizenship by descent after the 2025 changes.
Before you book
- Gather your documents first. The Toronto consulate recommends booking only after you've collected everything, and says appointments are individual. Source: Consulate Toronto, Prenot@mi
- Book at the consulate for where you live. Los Angeles, for example, takes applications only from residents of Arizona, Southern California, Nevada and New Mexico, with proof of legal residence in its area. Source: Consulate Los Angeles
- Your Prenot@mi account is tied to one consulate. If you're registered elsewhere, log in and use "Change Embassy/Consulate" rather than making a new account. Source: Consulate Toronto
Technical tips from the Washington embassy
- Use Google Chrome (version 88 or later) or Microsoft Edge on a desktop or laptop, not a phone or tablet.
- If you get errors, switch browsers, try incognito/private mode, and don't use a web translator. Change the language with the portal's own option instead.
- If nothing happens when you click "Book My Appointment", many people are trying at once. Clear your cache and try again.
- Repeated wrong passwords lock your account for 24 hours. Booking attempts too fast for a human (for example with bots) can get the account blocked.

When slots appear and the waiting list
Times differ by office. Toronto says new appointments open daily around 6 p.m. Toronto time, and that red dates or green dates that vanish quickly usually mean slots are taken, not a software fault. Source: Consulate Toronto Toronto also offers a waiting list with limited places. You can stay on it for up to 90 days, and you lose your place if you turn down or don't confirm the slot it offers. After you book
- Confirm the appointment from the email Prenot@mi sends, or it's cancelled automatically. Check your spam folder. Source: Consulate Toronto
- Toronto says Prenot@mi asks you to confirm attendance between the 10th and 3rd day before the appointment. Cancel in the system if you can't go. Source: Consulate Toronto
- Procedures on the day vary. Los Angeles says the appointment is personal and non-transferable, and that on that date you mail your application instead of going in person. Source: Consulate Los Angeles Boston collects the fee at the consulate on the day of the appointment. Source: Consulate Boston
Fee
The fee for an adult's application to be recognized is 600 euros. Source: Consulate Los Angeles Boston says it's paid in U.S. dollars, the amount changes every quarter, and it's $691 until December 31, 2026. It's non-refundable. Source: Consulate Boston
